                     Hand carved wooden printing blocks

Block printing is one of the traditional methods used for producing patterns on cloth in India. Printing blocks are carved from local hardwoods by craftsmen using techniques that are thousands of years old. The blocks featured below were purchased under fair trade conditions from craftsmen in Rajasthan.

These printing blocks or stamps can be used to print on paper, cards and fabric such as cushions, table cloths or T-shirts. At the simplest level, posters paints sqeezed on to pieces of felt make printing pads for printing on paper. Children of all ages can use these simple techniques to create intricate and excitng patterns. The blocks can be cleaned easily by soaking in warm water and re-used for many years.
